About Derrick

Derrick with songwriting partner Terry Abrahamson.

Before settling down in Milwaukee at the age of 8, I bounced around from Virginia to Germany to Venezuela as an Army brat. Milwaukee was where I began with piano lessons through elementary school. By high school, I was fairly certain that music would be my calling card. I was deeply affected by all of the great music of the period…Beatles, Stones, Ray Charles, Elvis, Chuck Berry. By my sophomore year, I was playing in cover bands. I learned my first licks on harmonica from my best friend’s older brother which led me inevitably to the Blues. And the Blues led me eventually to Hello Mojo!

A couple of decades of playing with various Midwest bands and a yearning to express myself through song eventually led to recording and studio work. My success as a songwriter and producer has allowed me to focus more on family life. I have three adult children and a loving wife and dog who all support me and my musical journey…and supply me with endless material for songs!

While I enjoy taking on the various roles in tribute shows and leading a large society band for private engagements, there is nothing that compares to the joy that comes from presenting my
own music and entertaining new audiences.
