Showtune Styles: From R&H to Rock-n-Roll
January 4-25 (Saturday mornings, 9 AM-12 PM)
Musical theatre is all about the songs, and every song tells a story—but the styles in which those stories are told have had quite the evolution, and a musical theatre pro needs to master them all! Sage Studio is proud to present a new workshop for teen singers focused on the ever-changing world of musical theatre styles—and mastering songs from both the “classical” and “contemporary” repertoire. Students will study history of the genre, performance skills and vocal technique, and put that knowledge into practice as they tackle performing two songs—one from pre-1960’s “Golden Age” musical theatre, and one from modern “rock”-style musical theatre. Many college programs ask for varying song styles in their placement auditions, so this is a great chance to build up that repertoire! The workshop culminates with a recital for friends and family at the Raue Center.
Pre-requisites: Age limit is 15-18. Students must exhibit an appreciation and aptitude for musical theatre. Students are also required to submit a video audition of a musical theatre song. If unable to submit a video, please contact Kate Wilford, 815.356.9010 x 10, to schedule an audition. Application deadline is December 20, 2013.
Funny Business: A Comedy Workshop
February 1 and 8 (Saturday mornings, 9 AM-12 PM)
Led by comedian Pat McGann, this new workshop is all about the laughs—and learning how to master the sometimes challenging, but always exciting world of onstage comedy.
Pre-requisites: Age limit is 15-18. Students must exhibit an appreciation and aptitude for theatre. Application deadline is January 17, 2014.
Triple Threat: Auditioning for Musical Theatre
April 5-May 10 (Saturday mornings, 9 AM-12 PM)
Back for a second year, this advanced workshop is designed for teens who are preparing for college theatre program auditions, spring and summer shows, or just want to get the callback at that next audition—because it all starts with getting the part! Students will learn from theatre veterans, focusing on practical techniques and strategies in key musical theatre performance areas–acting, singing, and dance–to help them stand out from the crowd and become a more well-rounded performer–a true “triple threat!” With an emphasis on audition skills, this workshop ends with an audition opportunity for industry professionals, including representatives from Williams Street Repertory, the in-house professional theatre company at the Raue Center.
Pre-requisites: Age limit is 15-18. Students must exhibit an appreciation and aptitude for musical theatre. Students are also required to submit a video audition of a musical theatre piece, and a video of a monologue (if available). If unable to submit a video, please contact Kate Wilford, 815.356.9010 x 10, to schedule an audition. Application deadline is March 14, 2014.

Technical Theatre Workshop
June 16-20 (Monday-Friday, 9 AM-2 PM)
Sage Studio is thrilled to bring back the Technical Theatre Workshop for a second year! Focused on audio and lighting, these courses take an in-depth look at the fundamentals of these essential production elements. Led by professional staff from Raue Center, students will examine the properties that define sound and light waves, then follow the signal through each piece of equipment it passes, and conclude with a practical look at mixing in a live setting. The final day puts the knowledge to use running a mock show on Raue Center’s stage! Whether working on high school theatrical productions, worship services, or for a local band, students will walk away with a better understanding of these elements along with the skills to put that knowledge into practice. Students may choose to focus on one area or both.
Tuition: $100 for one area (lighting or sound); $150 for both
Pre-requisites: Age limit is 15-18. Students should show an interest in tech theatre and submit a letter of recommendation from an instructor or other adult that can speak to the student’s work. Application deadline is June 13, 2014.
